Robroo highlights ghastly ritual of AfPak tribals on forced marriage through VaniDafan

Early times Report

Jammu, Feb 27 : In its second leg , Nutan International Theatre Festival-2020 opened at Karatr Singh Duggal Auditorium at Virsa Vihar , Amritsar. The opening play was the maiden work of Jammu’s celebrated playwright Vikram Sharma entitled “ VaniDafan” which was produced , designed and directed by daughter of soil Kajal Suri for Robroo , New Delhi.
Vani is a custom found in parts of India, Pakistan and Afghanistan where girls are given in marriage or servitude to an aggrieved family as compensation to end disputes, often murder and is a form of arranged or forced child marriage. Vani is a Pashto word derived from Vanay which means blood.
Though laws in 2005 and 2011 have declared the practice illegal the custom still continues to be practised. In 2004, Court outlawed all such “parallel justice” systems. But the writ of government is weak in rural areas, and local police often turn a blind eye.
The story Vani-Dafan starts with a young girl named Vaziya offering herself to embrace Vani in place of a widowed Darkshna which the council agrees to. Young Vaziya agrees to be bride of older Bakhtawar Ghazi whose tribe had killed the husband of Darakshna and won her as Vani.
Bakhtawar who is head of the whole clan and eldest in Khokar tribe has eunuch Guncha Gul as his aide who takes care of all customary practices. Young Vaziya who had come with a plan to end the ghastly ritual of the tribe takes Guncha Gul in confidence and tells her the motive. Guncha associates with Vaziya in the noble cause and both plan the murder of Bakhtawar Ghazi which is secretly executed. Young Vaziya announces the death of Bakhtawar in the council and once again offers herself to be chosen as Vani by any person since she herself had killed Bakhtawar . Confused Council says that constitution does not allows and instead accept Vaziya as the head of whole tribe. Here Vaziya declares her will to change the ghastly ritual of Vani by inviting all lusting people of clan to satisfy their hunger with her and stop bloodshed and killing of people. The system is redefined and refined as entire clan changes and practice comes to end, but not before Vaziya’s own son commits rape on a girl of clan.
Once again Vaziya has to take the tough decision in Council where she herself shoots her son to keep the ethicality of the system defined.
Kajal Suri and Drishti Sharma as Vaziya Zareen gave power packed performances. Rajeev Maini, Gaurav Devgun were other two protagonist who displayed their acting prowess as Bakhtawar Ghazi and Guncha Gul. Vatsla, Anjali, Shradda, Ram Mehra , Siddhant, Ambuj, Vineet Shravan, Saksham, Pankaj , Rohit, Rahul and Umer excelling as different characters. Thespian Theatrist and Padam Shri Bansi Kaul , the chief guest on the occasion while commending the effort of group in making VaniDafan successful recalled his association with Kajal’s father Late Vijay Suri whom he said was an iconic personality and wished Kajal and her Robroo for future success.
