Ensure proper sanitation, sewage for Ekta Vihar: Munish urges admin
Choked drains, irk local residents
3/28/2020 10:49:10 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT

JAMMU, Mar 28: Editor in Chief, Early Times, Munish Gupta, on Friday rebuked the authorities for failing to provide a mechanism of decongested drains and provision of hygienic conditions to the inhabitants of Ekta Vihar in Kunjwani area due to which the residents there are facing a lot of inconveniences.
Munish, who would be contesting the forthcoming Assembly elections as an independent candidate from Gandhi Nagar constituency, said “Choked drains are causing a lot of problems to the residents of Ekta Vihar. The existing drains are clogged and sewage water is entering houses and also flowing on the roads, causing a lot of troubles for the locals. Residents fear health complications from these blocked drains.”
“Insanitary conditions prevailing in the area are proof enough to expose the tall claims of the administration to develop the city on modern lines. If such is the face of development in the city then it’s really a sad state of affairs. The innocent people are being deceived in the name of development, which in reality exists only on papers and not at all visible on ground.”
Munish urged the administration to direct its official machinery to initiate the process of complete cleansing of the drains as well as the surroundings of Ekta Vihar at the earliest so that the problems being faced by the residents could be minimized.
Meanwhile, residents of Ekta Vihar near JK Public School in Kunjwani area while talking to Early Times said, “We are annoyed by the inundation of sewage water for quite some time now. The unhygienic conditions we live under are nothing less than a hell. Sewage water overflowing from drains, street filled with sewage water and the resultant stench makes breathing difficult.”
Due to heavy discharge of domestic sewerage, the drains often overflows and the adjoining open plots turn into a pond of sewage creating health hazard for the residents. They alleged that no measures have been taken to address sewage overflow.
“The stagnant contaminated water in streets and choked drains emanate foul smell. It is giving a tough time to the residents and passersby. We keep our windows and doors closed most of the times, even passersby have to hold their breath until they walk or drive past the area. Drinking water also gets contaminated by the blockage in drains and inundation. We also informed about the problems to the concerned agencies, but to no avail,” said several residents.
While others informed Early Times that the heavy downpour on Friday led to waterlogging in various locations of the locality, courtesy choked drains.
Deepika said, “Even moderate rain leads to waterlogging in the area, causing inconvenience to residents and commuters. We have approached the concerned authorities time and again with regard to stagnation of water in and around the residences during rains, but no action was taken.”
“Drains passing close to the houses have been choked due to accumulation of waste and garbage. Drains stink badly which at times become unbearable. Stagnant dirty water attracts fleas and mosquitoes due to which outbreak of diseases like malaria, cholera and dengue can happen anytime. We urged the authorities on several occasions to cleanse these drains, but nothing has been done so far,” she said.
