Rumours on social media create panic among masses
3/30/2020 11:15:32 PM

Early Times Report
jammu, Mar 30: Though the Government had warned serious action against rumour mongers who pass on false information about COVID-19, no action has been taken against social media groups passing on such information among masses through their network.
Sources said panic gripped in some parts of Jammu two days back after some people floated false news that two positive COVID-19 cases were reported from Jagti township.
Though this report had no base yet some social media groups carried it without verifying its authenticity and base and soon the news spread people especially those whose relatives live in township became panicky.
Sources said the couple had come from abroad over a month back and after reaching Jagti the local Relief authorities had still asked them to remain in home Quarantine for one month for their own and others safety.
Now the period is almost over and family showed no signs of virus or any thing and both couple is hale and hearty but some people floated the false news creating scare among people.
However when the news was refuted by Relief and Rehabilitation Commissioner, the police booked the persons who floated rumour and filed FIR against them
The floating of false news is not confined to this case only but social media is agog with rumours nowadays, sources said.
Recently a news was attributed to a repeated doctor about COVID when the doctor through a national news channel refuted the same saying that he has not
given any such statement. This way again people were made panicky by the rumour mongers who go without check. Sources said there are many social media groups who spread false news about COVID to make people panicky and there is no check on them with the result they surpass false information in the public.
A social media group even yesterday had loaded a video giving information that coming some days are crucial for India and there would be many deaths making people panicky and scared. But such groups get encouragement due to lack of action from authorities.
