Forget official transport, SMC to hire private vehicles
4/5/2020 10:52:33 PM

Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Apr 5: Even as the Srinagar Municipal Corporation has a fleet of government vehicles that are used for transportation of employees and material, the corporation has planned to allegedly hire scores of vehicles "to deal with coronavirus outbreak."
Sources said the SMC has decided to hire around one dozen vehicles for moving out during office work and that thousands of rupees would be spend on such movement day.
Sources said there was no need for any such expenditure given the availability of transport. "We not only have a fleet of vehicles including buses and trucks available, we also have a full fledged workshop in place as well," said a senior official on the condition of anonymity.
He said the hiring of vehicles will be burden on the corporation and can only benefit some influential people.
Sources said some corporators are pushing for the hiring of private vehicles so that some of their nears and dears get benefitted.
"This is being done only with sole motive and intention of benefitting some of the political pockets of the corporators, the government should look into the matter," the official said.
He said in such testing times when the Lieutenant Governor LG Murmu has called for donations to tackle with the crises, why should government money be wasted on such things.
"I would recommend that no such decision is needed," the official said.
But sources said some of the elected corporators are pressuring the SMC to give a consent to hiring of vehicles to benefit some influential.
When contacted a senior official said the proposal was being discussed and was likely to be implemented in the coming days.
A senior officer of the Housing Department said the matter would be looked into.
Meanwhile some of the SMC Corporators have appealed Lieutenant Governor to personally look into the matter.
