Hoarders beware
4/9/2020 9:00:34 PM
COVID-19 cases increasing with each passing day is not good news for anyone. This deadly virus has brought all the activities to a grinding halt across the globe. Most of the countries are in lockdown mode and are advising people to stay at home.
India too is under lockdown and the possibility about it being lifted soon seems bleak. It's unfortunate that a few elements are trying to take the advantage of the situation and are resorting to hoarding. This has created artificial scarcity of the essential commodities and has led to the skyrocketing of the prices.
Recently Centre asked the States and Union Territories to invoke provisions of the Essential Commodities (EC) Act, 195 to ensure smooth supply of food items and discourage hoarding and black marketing.
Invoking the act is need of the hour as it will send a tough message to the elements who are trying to encash fear by resorting to dirty tactics. Once this act is invoked the hoarders can get a 7-year jail term. The government needs to put in place some deterrent to stop hoarders from succeeding in their evil designs.
People who are resorting to hoarding should realize that these are difficult times and they should not indulge in such acts which will add to the miseries of a common man. These people should realize that they too are part of the same society and they have to act responsibly. People will get lot of opportunities to earn money. Earning huge profits during pandemic is not at all humanity. So let's become responsible and behave like humans and not like animals.
Once the Essential Commodities Act is enforced the hoarders won't get an opportunity to defend themselves as it's a very stringent law. It's a warning for the hoarders that the government has taken a strong note of their actions and they can end up in a big trouble.
Authorities across the country are making every possible effort to ensure that people don't face shortage of the essential commodities due to the prevailing lockdown. And the people who will create any sort of artificial scarcity of any commodity will have to face the law.
There are reports that production of many items has declined due to the prevailing lockdown but the government is ensuring that essential commodities and medicines reach the common man. Units and factories involved in producing essentials and medicines have been given a special permission to operate.
