Migrant labourers at Railway Station Jammu facing starvation
No Govt relief provided to them during ongoing lockdown
4/9/2020 11:47:17 PM
Early Times Report
jammu, Apr 9: Around 300 migrant labourers, which used to work at Railway Station Jammu to earn their livelihood, have been facing starvation due to continuous lockdown in the wake of COVID-19 as the availability of ration with them has totally exhausted.
Shockingly the claims of Government of providing eatables to the poor in this lockdown period have virtually deflated in their situation, which can be seen from the deplorable condition of these labourers, which reside near Railway Station Jammu and backside of GRP quarters.
Sources told Early Times that majority of the labourers hail from Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Bihar etc. and used to earn livelihood by doing work of loading and unloading of various goods from trains but even since the lockdown, these labourers which are around 300 in numbers have become jobless and leading their life in very tough condition due to non-availability of rations etc.
These labourers, generally employed by contactors have been left to suffer in such critical times and most of them have been working here for the last 30-35 years almost spent their entire life here in this work but administration seems to be ignorant of their plight.
"We have no money with us to purchase ration as we have spent whatever we had. Although we heard that government has been directed by the center to provide ration and other essential commodities but till date nobody has reached to us. Our children have been dying of hunger as we are unable to go out to seek help," some labouerers said.
They further said that although Government Railway Police (GRP) headquarter is just near this labour colony but it didn't take note of terrible condition of this lot despite the fact that at this juncture, every government department has been coming forward to help the poor and needy.
When contacted District Development Commissioner (DDC) Jammu, Sushma Chouhan in this connection, she said that she would first inquire about it by sending an official there and only possible help with be extended to them.
