‘Send us back to our native places’

Early Times Report

Jammu, May 4: The District Administration Jammu on Monday came under serious stress, when hundreds of migrant laborers suddenly came out on streets to protest against the alleged failure of authorities to provide them with ration during lockdown, and not making arrangements for sending them to their native places.
The incident took place at Marble Market Trikuta Nagar, when over 400 migrant laborers associated with construction works, staged an anti-government protest alleging that they are facing immense hardships during this lockdown as no adequate ration is being provided to them. The protesters said that they are at the verge of facing starvation.
The protest also exposed the lack of coordination within the frontline departments, that have allegedly failed to provide adequate and timely relief to the stranded laborers.
“It has been more than one and half month, since the lockdown has been declared, which has made our lives miserable as we have not been getting ration properly. Officials haven’t paid any heed towards our requests. We are very concerned about our children and women, who are suffering a lot due to non-availability of ration,” said Ram Bachan Roa, migrant labour leader.
He said that various departments have taken list of stranded migrant laborers many times for distribution of ration but very little ration has been provided to them till date.
“Although Labour Department had compiled a list of stranded migrant laborers but whenever we approached the officials, they replied that list has been sent to District Administration. We were asked to get in touch with the concerned tehsildar for ration. Moreover, the helpline issued by the Labour Department remains busy and our calls are never answered. What is the use of installing the helpline,” he said.
Meanwhile, SSP Jammu along with concerned SHO reached the spot and tried to pacify the laborers. The agitating labourers informed the SSP Jammu that police have taken list of them many times but ration was not provided.
They also said that they have submitted details and particulars for their return to their native States by train, which has been recently announced by the Central Government.
