Early Times Report

Jammu, May 22: A senior official in the Education Department is seeming resorting to flip-flop in decision making about whether the private schools should defer collection of fee or not thereby irking the parent community in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
Very recently this top official on May 11 urged the private schools to defer the fee collection from the students during COVID-19 pandemic lockdown.
He also said that government has taken various measures to help students to continue their study during COVID-19 pandemic.
The same day, however, the official took to social media asking the private “schools to collect tuition fees; let management to decide tpt fees Concessions.”
“Few not all pvt schools fleece our kids; let some one list out such schools and give specific names ; most pvt schools in JKUT charge reasonable fees; they have to pay their teachers as well; SeD may issue more instructions anyways,” the official said in the social media post.
Two days later, on May 13 the government allowed private schools to collect pending tuition charges for the lockdown months and asked the management to decide about the concession of transport charges for those months that remained closed in backdrop of Coronavirus pandemic.
Authorities also said that some private schools in Jammu and Kashmir were fleecing the students while most of them were charging reasonable tuition and other charges.
While the parent community has been demanding exemption in payment of school fee and bus fee, the school owners have been pleading that they have to pay wages to their staff and that cannot be done unless fee is collected.
A senior official on the condition of anonymity said there was some “confusion” over the stand of the concerned department over collection of the fee as the stakeholders were initially not taken into confidence.
“But now things are being sorted out after a meeting was held with the forums of the private schools,” the official said.
Despite repeated attempts the official accused of flip-flop in decision making couldn’t be contacted for comments.
