Early Times Report

SUNDERBANI, May 28: The clear cut directions of Supreme Court that saw mills, mills and cutters should not be present without permission in the forests and areas near forest are being violated without any fail in this tehsil of Rajouri district in Jammu division.
Sources told Early Times that the many of saw mills and mills are operating in Sunderbani and at the same time there is no stopping the violators of law to carry out cutting of trees with the help of cutters. They said the concerned officials of the Department of Forests are in league with violators and same is taking a toll on the green gold of the tehsil.
“Following the Supreme Court directions the government of Jammu & Kashmir issued SRO 103 in 2012 on 26-3-2012 in which Department of Forests had made it clear that nobody can operate a saw mill, a mill or a cutter in a forest area or nearby area without the permission of the department,” said sources.
Sources said the issuance of this SRO did not deter the violators of law to stop the illegal activities in this tehsil. They said that locals have been spotting the usage of cutters for cutting of trees in many villages including Nohoti where an incident took place just three or four days back.
“The information was passed on to the concerned officials of the department with the hope that some action would be taken. It took the concerned Block Officer Rajinder Kumar three days to send the team and although the team reached the village no action was taken. This shows the inapt attitude of the people at helm,” said sources.
Sources said that three cutters have also been spotted in villages like Seiya, Barakh, Nallah and Makol and these were employed to cut the trees in these villages. They said that same is being done despite the issuance of order 324-41 CFC dated 12-5-2020 by Conservator of Forests that operation of cutters, mills and saw mills are banned in Rajouri.
Conservator of Forests Rajouri, Mohan Das told Early Times that no cutter would be allowed to operate in the entire range. He said that people should contact him in this regard adding that he would not hesitate to take action against the Block Officer and other officials if they fail to discharge their duties.
