5/29/2020 10:02:17 PM
Early times REport

Jammu, May 29: As medical experts across the globe lay emphasis on maintaining adequate hygiene and hand-washing practices to combat the threat of Covid-19 pandemic, the situation is worrisome as far as the Union Territory of J&K is concerned.
“The poor status of hand-washing practices can be gauged from the fact that only 46.2 per cent population in rural areas wash their hands with water and soap/detergent before the meals,” reported The Tribune qouting report of National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO).
Around 51 per cent population wash hands with water while 2.3 per cent population wash their hands with water and ash/sand/mud, the report mentioned. It added, 0.4 per cent population does not wash their hands before having their meals.
In urban areas, 60.1 per cent population wash their hands with water and soap/detergent before the meals whereas 38.4 per cent population wash their hands with water only. Around 1.4 per cent population in urban areas wash their hands with water and ash/sand/mud before having their meals and 0.1 per cent population never wash their hands before meals.
In terms of combined urban and rural population, only 49.6 per cent population wash their hands with water and soap/detergents before meals, pointed the NSSO report.
While 48 per cent population wash hands with water only, 2.1 per cent population wash their hands with water and ash/sand/mud. The report added, 0.3 per cent population never wash their hands.
Further, more than 71 per cent schools in J&K do not even have basins or taps near toilets and urinals.
Only 54.6 per cent state-run schools in Jammu and Kashmir have the provision of safe drinking water facility, while 36.6 per cent schools have no such provision.
Around 8.9 per cent schools have made the provisions, but no drinking water is available.
As per the Unified District Information System for Education (UDISE), there are around 28,714 schools – government and private – in J&K.
