EARLY TIMES REPORT

UDHAMPUR, May 29: Wife and two little daughters of a contractual driver who died while on duty a year back are on the verge of facing starvation and other miseries of hard live.
Kanika, wife of the deceased driver informed that his husband Sanjeev Kumar worked for 22 long years with the PHE Department and last year he died in a road accident while he was taking the water tanker to Sankari Mela at Pancheri in Udhampur district. “Initially we were told by the department officers not to register a case against the department and we were promised a job while also assured of other help from the department but nothing like that ever happened even after the lapse of a year,” she told Early Times. Kanika also informed that there are numerous such families who are suffering apathy of the department. Still dreaming high, Anita, the younger daughter of the deceased driver, says that she wished to be a teacher to educate masses but lack of resources are creating hurdles to make her dream a realization. While the neighbours and some organizations help the family, the department concerned has never bothered to extend a helping hand to them. When contacted, the concerned Executive Engineer, Mohd Taj claimed that there are no rules or circular under which they could help the family of the deceased driver but the NGOs and Red Cross Society can support them.
