After Omar shows teeth to Centre; NC announces to boycott delimitation commission | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, May 29: A day after former Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah shown his teeth to Centre following its failure after abrogation of Article 370, National Conference on Friday announced to boycott delimitation commission. Even as Speaker of the Lok Sabha, Om Birla has nominated National Conference Members of Parliament (MPs) namely Dr Farooq Abdullah, Mohammad Akbar Lone and Hasnain Masoodi as associate members to the Delimitation Commission, party announced to boycott this exercise to redraw 90 assembly constituencies in the Union Territory (UT) of J&K. Important to mention here that on May 27, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla nominated associate members to the Delimitation Commission set up by the Centre for J&K and other States headed by Justice (Retd) Ranjana Prakash Desai. The members among others include Union Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) Dr Jitendra Singh and National Conference patriarch Dr Farooq Abdullah. Mohammad Akbar Lone, Lok Sabha MP from Baramulla, Jugal Kishore Sharma, MP from Jammu-Poonch constituency, Hasnain Masoodi and Member of Parliament from Anantnag were also nominated as associate members. With reference to the recently announced Delimitation Commission announced by government of India, Jammu & Kashmir National Conference today rejects this process and its three members of the parliament will not participate in the said commission. In a statement issued, the party said, “This delimitation commission is a product of the J&K Re-organization Act 2019 which JKNC is challenging in and outside SC. Participating in this delimitation Commission will be tantamount to accepting the events of August 5, 2019 which the NC is unwilling to do.” “According to the constitution of J&K, the constituencies of J&K were to be delimited in 2026 with rest of the country. The constituencies in the state were last delimited in ‘90s. Thereafter an amendment was made in the constitution of J&K unanimously passed in the state Assembly in which all the regional parties, Congress and BJP voted for this amendment to go with the delimitation with rest of the country in 2026. Therefore the constitution of the delimitation commission is unwarranted,” the statement added. |
