ICELA demands ban on use of surfactants

JAMMU, May 30: Indian Council for Enviro-Legal Action (ICELA) J&K Chapter Convener and former legislator Ashok Sharma has reiterated the demand and urged upon the Union Government Secretary to Ministry for Environment, Forest and Climatic change to stop with immediate effect the use of surfactants in synthetic /chemical detergents and discharge of waste thereof, in the Lakes, Rivers, Streams, Wet Lands in J&K to save the human and aquatic life in his letter communicated through email.
He urged upon the central government to constitute an independent expert committee to determine the extent of damage caused to water bodies due to pollution caused by synthetic detergents and to suggest alternatives which can replace chemical detergents to ensure check on harmful effects of such contamination and nutrient pollution in the, water bodies and on human population as well.
Sharma also urged upon the Union and Union Territory governments, Urban Development Wings, Central and J&K Pollution Control Boards, Mayors of Jammu and Srinagar Municipal Corporations and Vice Chairman LAWDA to take immediate measures to stop harmful effect of detergent pollution in his communicate on this serious issue, effecting human immune system during COVID-19. Former legislator pleaded that Eutrophication or Nutrient pollution is normally a natural process by which water bodies gradually age and become more productive.
