Early Times Report

RAJOURI, June 2: At a time when stress is being laid on preservation of forests in Jammu & Kashmir the officials of Department of Revenue have facilitated the encroachment of forest land in at least two tehsils of border district. Sources in the Department of Forests told Early Times that hundreds of kanals of forest land has been encroached in the Sunderbani and Seyot tehsils of this district. They said that officials of Department of Revenue have extended a helping hand in this whole process by legalizing the encroachment.
“Hundreds of kanals of forest land under compartment number 50/D at Rugga village in Seyot tehsil and compartment number 113/D at Makol village in Sunderbani tehsil has been encroached. The construction work is going on as well and the Department of Revenue officials are mainly responsible for the same,” said sources. Sources said that over the years the Patwari, Girdawar and Tehsildar have made illegal documents of the forest land and transferred the same to the people under a deal. They said that people have been given proprietary rights of the forest land following which they raised the constructions. “In some of the cases some back date entries were made and notices were issued to the encroachers by the Department of Forests. The encroachers presented the documents that have been prepared in connivance with the Department of Revenue officials. The forest land has been sold following which the documents have been prepared,” said sources. Sources while quoting officers of Department of Forests said that Department of Vigilance should hold a probe in the whole matter so that stern action is taken against the Revenue officials who facilitated the encroachment of forest land. They said that once such action is taken then the others would be taught a lesson.
The locals have also demanded that Lieutenant Governor Girish Chander Murmu to intervene in the matter so that the system is streamlined and the forest land is not encroached further.
When contacted, Tehsildar Sunderbani Jitender Singh said that no Patwari and no Girdawar would be allowed to issue documents to the people who encroach the forest land in the tehsil. He said that if any Patwari or Girdawar is found involved stern action would be taken against him.
