New leaders, new ways
6/2/2020 11:30:51 PM
As the role of traditional parties in Kashmir has almost come to an end, the new political formations are appearing in the Valley.
Media reports suggest that Kashmir is likely to get another political party soon. And this party would comprise of the young leaders. Emergence of new political forces in the Valley has left the Kashmir centric politicians—who used to say that there will be no one left in the Valley to lift the national flag—red faced. The people, who have come forward to hold the tricolour close to their heart, have a clear agenda as they are demanding what is possible.
The young leaders, who are likely to form the new party, are looking at addressing the issues which touch the skin of common people. They are building their narrative around a clear theme i.e. addressing unemployment and promoting peace and development.
The era of the leaders, who used to sell illusions, like azadi, self-rule, autonomy and achievable nationhood, has ended. They hoodwinked people by raising hollow slogans for nearly 70-years. Today these leaders don’t stand anywhere. Their parties are at crossroads. Their grassroot workers have left them and the ones who used to claim that they are tall leaders of J&K have lost their addresses.
The leaders who were detained post August 5, 2019 and released after a few months have maintained complete silence. In fact, they have not spoken over any issues and it seems that they don’t want to open their mouths. But it appears that most of these leaders have reconciled with the reality that they cannot flog a dead horse and nor can they talk about the issues which have lost relevance. They remaining silent is a sort of acceptance.
Recently, National Conference leader and a former MLA, Aga Ruhullah, reacted very sharply to his top party leadership maintaining silence over the decisions which were taken by the Government of India on August 5, 2019. Indirectly he cast aspersions on his party top leaders for not even uttering a word on J&K’s special status being abrogated and it being divided into two union territories.
Kashmir centric leaders, who used to consider themselves as kings, are in a dilemma. They seem to be running out of ideas about how to handle pressure. Confusion and chaos prevailing within the traditional Kashmir centric parties has left the ground open for new parties to come forward and take the charge.
