CLUJ’s hasty decision leaves students high and dry

EARLY TIMES REPORT

JAMMU, June 2: As the fifth phase of the nationwide lockdown has already begun in several other parts of the country, except J&K where the fourth phase has been stretched a little further till June 8, guidelines by and large were eased up to resume the smooth functioning of most of the essential components needed for a normal life. While major activities in different spheres of life have set into motion, the decision to resume the educational activities, particularly those associated with the under graduate courses, is also taking some concrete shape here as the two major Varsities of Jammu region i.e. University of Jammu (JU) and Cluster University of Jammu (CLUJ) have rolled out some measures to recommence the halted curriculum.
However, a large number of students of CLUJ are not satisfied with the decision taken by their alma mater with regard to evaluation for avoiding further delay in the academic session.
The authorities of CLUJ have finalized the plans for holding exams of students and their promotion to the next semester.
The University will hold the terminal semester exams from July 1 to July 15 for which the date sheet will be issued separately by the respective principals of the colleges.
“The decision of the CLUJ to conduct the college wise and school (faculty) wise exams for sixth semester from July 1 by giving one time relaxation to the students in pattern of question papers is somewhat not practical keeping in view the present circumstances where everyone is living under the continuous scare of coronavirus,” the aggrieved students of CLUJ seeking anonymity said.
“The manner in which the varsity has taken a hasty decision to hold examinations is beyond comprehension. CLUJ is behaving as if the danger of COVID-19 has subsided completely. Even the date sheet has not been declared but the dates for the commencement of exam have been announced which means we have only less than a month to prepare. They are not even ready to reduce the syllabus. It’s almost impossible for us to face the examination,” they added.
The students said that coronavirus pandemic has spared no one; every section of society has witnessed its wrath.
“Everybody is talking about the miserable condition of migrant labourers, poorly placed patients other than Covid-19 positive, doctors and almost every other sector which has been hit worst by this pandemic. But the issues of the students who are facing the indifferent attitude of the CLUJ administration have been ignored completely in all the hullaballoo, as a consequence authorities have taken them lightly,” the students said.
The injustice meted out to these disadvantageously placed students could be gauged from the fact they are being treated unequally as compare to other students from the rest of India.
“Both are unequally placed as J&K students are deprived not only of classroom teaching but of online education too. No high speed internet in J&K has resulted in the deprivation of online education here which is being enjoyed by the students in other parts of the country. Under these circumstances students from rest of India can easily out-merit J&K students in entrance examinations to various universities which take into account both the academics and entrance marks,” the upset students told Early Times.
While these students are having grievances against the CLUJ authorities; the grievance cell established as per UGC guidelines has ignored almost every complaint of the students.
“No reply to the emails sent by the students has worsened the situation. The blatant lie of the university was clearly visible in the recent notification issued by them claiming therein the completion of 60% syllabus of all subjects in classroom and the rest 40% syllabus completion through online means, and uploading of the study-material on websites which is nothing but bundle of lies,” claimed the students.
The crucial issues pertaining to student community like-the fact that a large number of students presently are in Ladakh. Scores of students are facing problems of lack of internet as they are in no connection zone, many students hail from rural areas, hilly areas, many were stranded outside the state due to lockdown but not taken into account by those at the helm of affairs while framing examination policy,” the students lamented.
While many universities in and outside the state are keeping the safety of students as a priority, CLUJ is conducting examinations by putting students’ lives at grave risk in the light of the disadvantageous position of these students.
“The recent notification of CLUJ did not take into account any of the issues raised herein shows how the students as stakeholders are being treated shabbily,” said the students.
