Early Times Report

Rajouri, June 3: The building of Jammu and Kashmir Fire and Emergency Services (F&ES) Department in Rajouri is in a dilapidated condition.
Sources told Early Times that the building poses great threat to the lives of the employees. “The undue delay in taking measures to make the necessary repairs has made the employees anxious as they fear that any untoward incident can take place,” they added.
“The roof of the building is crumbling, walls have cracked, the rain water seeps in and the bathroom is without a door. Electricity wires are hanging. Moreover, the water supply remains irregular due to which staff is facing immense hardships. The office remains open 24x7 due to it being an emergency service.”
They maintained that the entire building is standing on pillars and due to its poor condition; the building can collapse any time particularly in case of an earthquake. “In past, during an earthquake, the stairs had developed cracks and it had lost its joint with walls, which can also invite major tragedy if corrective measures are not taken immediately,” they said.
They informed that around 15-18 employees remain present all the time in the building so that in case of any fire incident, they can react.
“Building has three rooms, including a store, and staff members remain confined to only two rooms. Not only this building even other buildings of the department are also in the same condition,” they added.
Assistant Director Rajouri-Poonch command, Raj Kumar Raina, when, contacted, said that he had taken up the matter with higher authority but due to COVID-19 pandemic, the matter is getting delayed. He said that he had also requested the PWD Rajouri to prepare DPR to repair the building.
Meanwhile, the members of the civil society appealed to the DG F&ES JK UT VK Singh to take note of the matter.
