Pregnant women continue to face medical apathy in Anantnag
Woman delivers baby in COVID hospital's corridor

EARLY TIMES REPORT

ANANTNAG, June 3: Despite bringing changes in administration, the pregnant women in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district continue to face medical apathy.
In a latest incident, a pregnant woman was allegedly forced to deliver in the corridor of a government hospital in Trauma Hospital Bijbehara which the government has recently converted in COVID-19 Hospital.
According to family, woman had tested positive for coronavirus on 28th of last month and was accordingly shifted to COVID-19 Hospital for hospital Quarantine while her family members including husband were shifted to administrative Quarantine facility setup by the district administration at High Ground Anantnag. “Today early in the morning she contacted us on phone and conveyed us that she was in labor pain. We tried to contact every single officer in the administration but none among them responded or picked up our phone calls,” Irfan Rashid, her relative told Early Times.
Irfan said that staffers at COVID-19 Hospital didn’t even bother to touch were while she delivered baby on hospital floor. “I immediately rushed towards the hospital and it took me around half an hour and I spotted patients (infected persons) helping and putting her in an ambulance,” he said.
Pregnant woman’s husband Rakeeb Ahmad told Early Times that inmates at COVID Hospital Bijbehara informed him on phone that doctor and other staff posted in the hospital didn’t attend my wife.
“They (inmates) told me that my wife has given birth to baby on hospital floor in corridor and even staff didn’t touch her. Some women in the hospital came and covered her with towels,” he added.
A lady at COVID hospital Bijbehara, whose video has gone viral on social media, says that lady doctor on duty directed them to umbilical cord and remove placenta. “Lady Doctor told us to cut umbilical cord but we couldn’t as we don’t know how it is being done,” she says in the video.
Medical Superintendent Sub-District Hospital Bijbehara, Dr Showket authenticated her claim by saying that they have shifted the pregnant woman to Srinagar for retained placenta complication.
“Yes, a pregnant woman has given birth to a baby in COVID Hospital Bijbehara and now we have shifted her to Srinagar for retained placenta complications,” he told Early Times on Phone.
A leading Gynecologist at Anantnag told Early Times that the doctor on duty either should have shifted the patient from SDH Bijbehara that has been designated hospital for COVID infected pregnant ladies or should have conducted her delivery herself and removed the placenta.
A doctor or midwife is supposed to cut the umbilical cord and remove the placenta if a woman doesn’t deliver it spontaneously.
“If a retained placenta is not treated, the mother is susceptible to both infection and extreme blood loss, which could be life-threatening,” she said.
Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, P K Pole on being contacted said that he had sought a report from Deputy Commissioner Anantnag. “It’s sad. I have sought a report from DC Anantnag and action will be taken against whosoever is involved,” he said.
