Agri Dept supplies substandard quality seeds to farmers, low yield received

RAJOURI, June 5: The farmers and Panchayat representatives of Rajouri district accused the Agricultural Department of providing substandard quality seeds to them due to which low harvest yield was received, a contradiction to its tall claims.
Angered farmers alleged that the seeds provided to them were not up to the mark which, quite opposite to actually sought by them. “During sowing season, a team of Agricultural Department had visited to various villages to conduct survey about upcoming cultivation and they gave us various suggestions for better cultivation and during interaction session, we demanded a particular company’s seed but instead we were given other companies seeds, which was of low quality and we didn’t produce desired result, which caused huge loss to us” the farmers alleged.
The farmers of villages along LoC said that already they had been facing Pak shelling, COVID-19 and now the betrayal by Agricultural Department Rajouri had made their life miserable. “We had asked the department to provide a good quality of seeds but we were not provided that one and department gave us different seeds and assured that it will produce bumper harvest, which proved of low quality resulting we could not get produce as per expectations,” they alleged.
Sarpanch Panchayat Halqa Bhawani-A, Sunil Choudhary, said that his panchayat, is one of most affected panchayat due to Pak shelling and agriculture is only occupation for their sustenance but due to substandard quality of seed provided to the farmers, very low produce was received this time and alleged that there is every possibility of nexus between department and the companies for their vested interest. Similarly, Sarpanch Panchyat Halqa Deeing-Kalal, Ramesh Choudhary said that seeds quality, which was demanded by the farmers, was not provided. He alleged that department conduct experiment of their seeds by providing them to farmers but as result they had to suffer a huge loss.
Chief Agricultural Officer (CAO) Rajouri Vijay Kumar denied allegation of providing low quality seeds and said that quality and company is decided by the higher authority. “We try to provide good quality seed to farmers and as per rules the quality of seeds is changed after every 10 years,” he added.
