Early Times Report

Doda, June 29: Three militants, including a Hizbul Mujahideen commander, were killed in an encounter with the security forces in Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Monday, according to police. Two Lashkar-e-Taiba militants and a commander of Hizbul Mujahideen were killed in Monday morning’s operation carried out by J&K police along with Rashtriya Rifles and CRPF at Khul Chohar in the south Kashmir district, said Sandeep Choudhary, SSP Anantnag. The Hizbul commander Masood hailed from Doda district of Jammu. “With Masood’s killing, Doda district in Jammu has become totally militancy free one again as Masood was the last surviving terrorist of Doda District,” a police spokesperson said.
Masood was involved in a rape case which was being investigated by the Doda police while he was absconding. He later joined Hizbul Mujahideen and shifted his area of operation to Kashmir, the spokesperson added.
Among the two deceased LeT militants, one was a district commander. The security forces launched a cordon and search operation at following information about the presence of militants in the area, a police official said.
The operation turned into an encounter after the militants fired upon a search party of the forces, who retaliated, the official said.
