Jammu, June 29: The Directorate of Economics and Statistics celebrated the Statistics Day today which was 14th in this series as a part of all India programme. The day was observed to pay homage and tribute to the late Prof. P.C Mahalanobis, an architect of Indian Statistics system.
The theme of 14th Statistics Day 2020 was extremely significant in the present context (COVID-19 pandemic) i.e to ensure Healthy lives and well being for all at all ages besides Gender equality and empowerment of all women and girls. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015 with the objective to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy place and prosperity by 2030. The reliable data is crucial for achieving these Goals by reducing data gaps and providing the real time data on areas which require interventions by the policy makers. Following releases, presentation and demonstration were made during the event by the MOSPI/participants SDGs Reports released by MOSPI, ISS Cadre Management Portal released by MOSPI, Presentation of the National Integrated Information Platform (NIIP), Demonstration of Generalised Survey solution (GSS) portal was launched, due to prevailing situation (COVID-19), the main event of the Statistics Day, 2020 was organized through webinar/Virtual events made only. The day reminds the participants about the use of statistics and its importance in various fields of economic planning for the development and well being of people, besides an opportunity for the filed functionaries to collect and compile data by improving its reliability for real time assessment of performance in various sectors of economy.
