Police playing leading role in anti-militancy operations in Kashmir : IGP

Srinagar, June 30: Asserting that J&K police is playing a leading role in anti-militancy operations in the valley, Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kashmir range, Vijay Kumar on Tuesday said that five militants have been killed during the last 24 hours in Anantnag. As many as 118 militants, including top commanders, have been killed in different operations during the last six months in Kashmir valley. Mr Kumar said two hardcore militants were killed in an encounter which ensued during a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) at Waghama area in south Kashmir district of Anantnag on Tuesday. With this, he said five militants have been killed by police and other security force agencies in the last 24 hours in Anantnag. ‘’J&K Police is playing a leading role in anti-militancy operations in the valley,’’ he added.
On Monday, three militants -- including a top Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) commander from Doda and two ultras from Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) -- were killed in an encounter at Runipora in Anantnag. On Saturday, the IGP had said that there are 29 foreign militants active in south Kashmir, but assured that the security forces are experienced enough to deal with them. ‘’There is a presence of foreign militants in the upper reaches of Kokernag, Tral and Khrew. There are about 29 foreign militants active in South Kashmir. We will neutralise them when they come down,’’ Mr Kumar had said.
