To oppose domicile laws, Kashmir based parties now hailing Maharaja Hari Singh’s vision
7/1/2020 11:50:43 PM

Early Times Report

Jammu, July 1: After demonizing last Dogra ruler Maharaja Hari Singh for years together as by calling him as ‘despot’ and ‘oppressor’, now some Kashmir centric parties are hailing Maharaja’s vision and invoking Maharaja to oppose domicile law introduced in the J&K from April 1, 2020.
As part of their campaign to oppose domicile certificates to ‘outsiders’, these parties are invoking the same Dogra rulers against whom a vicious and malicious campaign was launched earlier by them only.
Kashmir centric parties are arguing that it was Maharaja Hari Singh, who had introduced State Subject provision in the year 1927.
These parties are claiming Maharaja had brought these laws into effect to save the interests of those locals holding land and finding representation in the state administration as there were apprehensions of non-state subjects usurping the locals.
Interestingly the same Kashmir based parties had vociferously opposed a resolution passed in J&K Legislative Council to declare state holiday on September 23-the birthday of Maharaja. They had staged a walkout from the House, demanding withdrawal of the resolution as they had dubbed it “undemocratic, unconstitutional and in violation of the rules and business procedures” of the House.
Two-year back the state Legislative Council had passed a resolution to declare Maharaja Hari Singh birthday, September 23, as a state holiday after his two grandsons moved the proposal. Interestingly the resolution was passed on January 24 2018 but no decision was taken to implement the resolution due to opposition by Valley based parties and a faction within Congress.
