Early Times Report

SUNDERBANI, July 5: The flagship programme of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna (PMAY) has been grossly misused in at least one Panchayat of this tehsil in the Rajouri district with the real beneficiaries being left out of the programme.
Sources told Early Times that the Rural Development Department (RDD) has prepared a list of 128 persons who are entitled to houses under the PMAY in the Nallah Makol Panchayat of Sunderbani tehsil. The list is not a ‘real’ one since most of the deserving people have been left out with the non-deserving getting the share.
“The list of 128 beneficiaries has been prepared with respect to Nahoti, Barnara, Makol and Nallah in the Nallah Makol Panchayat. Hardly 25 percent of the beneficiaries are real ones with the rest not entitled to such a privilege. In other words we can say that by going the list houses are meant to be given to 75 percent of people who don’t deserve it,” said sources.
Sources said that not more than 30 beneficiaries belong to the Below Poverty Line (BPL) and fulfill the other parameters set out as eligibility criteria for getting houses under the PMAY. They said that around 100 beneficiaries are not entitled to PMAY but still then their names are in the list.
“Those people have been included in the list that come from well off families and are entitled to many other privileges. Some of them are working in the different government departments and in some cases the number is beyond one. Some of the businessmen have also been included in the list of beneficiaries under the PMAY,” said sources.
Sources said that the poor people and the widows belonging to BPL category without any government job or means of livelihood are not included in the list and as such would lose out of the flagship programme.
They said the local Panchayat representatives have ‘coerced’ the RDD officials to prepare the list so that their political ambitions are fulfilled.
The locals have urged Lieutenant Governor Girish Chander Murmu to form a committee of the RDD officials other than the Sunderbani tehsil so that a probe is carried out and a real list of beneficiaries is prepared. Repeated attempts to contact ACD Rajouri, Sushil Khajuria bore no fruit as his mobile was switched off.
When contacted concerned VLW Sheel Kumar Sharma said that justice would be done and it would be ensured that people having pucca houses would not be covered under the PMAY.
