Jammu continues to inspire fight against Covid-19 in JK as Kashmir shows spike
‘City of temples to be admired among most disciplined cities in pandemic’

Early Times Report

Jammu, July 8: Even as Covid19 cases in Kashmir have shown a sudden spike for the last few days, prompting the government to opt for restrictions in eleven of the twelve districts in the valley, the winter capital region of Jammu continues to show the way of tackling the deadly pandemic.
On July 3, the JK government issued fresh guidelines for revision of lockdown in the Union Territory. And the report card of the two provinces for the past around a month showed that Jammu continues to be law abiding and disciplined in fighting the Covid-19 whereas complaints of defiance of laid down protocols is seen as a cause of rising cases in Kashmir.
Officials said comparatively seventy percent of the cases and mortality is being reported from Kashmir whereas Jammu is showing even improvement as it’s headed to be declared Green Zone in the coming weeks.
Whereas in Jammu only one district of Ramban in the latest is a Red Zone, in Kashmir the number of Red Zone districts has risen from ten to eleven.
Officials said the “non-responsive and carefree behavior” of the people of Kashmir is being seen as a major reason for rise in cases whereas people of Jammu are disciplined.
Observers said the separatist sentiment that was nurtured in Kashmir in the last three odd decades has only added to the indiscipline whereas “nationalist Jammu is traditionally disciplined.”
Experts said this is despite the fact that Jammu could have faced more cases as most of the people who travelled into the Union Territory had the gateway through Lakhanpur, Jammu and Udhampur districts.
“When you have thousands of those coming from outside traveling via Jammu and also all road transport finding route through Jammu itself, there was a bigger risk in the province than Kashmir, but the good thing is the people of Jammu have shown the way to disciplined life,” said a senior doctor at the SK Institute of Medical Sciences on the condition of anonymity.
A senior official in the Civil Secretariat said the government was looking into the possibility of getting Jammu listed among the most disciplined cities in times of the pandemic. “See when the people of the region volunteer to be disciplined through social distancing and related norms like use of face mask and hand sanitizers, it means the place is worth to be showcased on standards of discipline before the rest of the world,” said the official on the condition of anonymity.
