Early Times Report

Leh, July 9: Krishi Vigyan Kendra-Leh, Ladakh working under Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir has been awarded the best KVK award in the zonal conference of KVKs organized by Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). Giving details, Dr. D. Namgyal, Prof. and Head KVK-Leh said that the KVKs are district level bodies that provide a platform for interface between farmers, researchers and extension functionaries to address the problems of agriculture and allied sectors. All the KVKs are under different Agricultural Technology Application Research Institutes (ATARI) previously called as Zonal Project Directorates (ZPDs).
Dr. Parveen Kumar SMS (Ag. Extension) further said that KVK-Leh has been providing various technological interventions to the farming community which has helped them to augment their income. The low cost production technologies like the trench cultivation, protected green houses, mulching with black polythene film, harvesting nets, pheromone traps have proved to be a boon for the farming community.
Due to mulching and low cost tunnels for vegetable cultivation, the production of different vegetables by the farmers’ fields have gone up. The harvesting nets provided to the farmers have also helped them to maintain the quality of fruits during plucking.
Besides these the KVK Leh is also involved in organizing farmers in groups, providing various training programmes to the farmers as well as the extension functionaries of agriculture as well as line departments. It also conducts regular exposure visits, field visits, Kisan Gosthi’s, farmer fairs, awareness programmes, distribution of relevant literature, regular campaigns, celebrating important days and many other programmes for the upliftment of farming community.
