KUPWARA, July 9: Two persons died after they slipped into a well while cleaning it in Chalgund village of Hatmat Pora Hyhama in Kupwara district of north Kashmir on Thursday. According to sources, two local residents of Harmatpora, Hyham in north Kashmir went inside the well for its cleaning. “Basically there is a scarcity of drinking water and due to which people either dug the new wells or clean the previous ones, for which they alleged the Public Health Engineering (PHE) department for their failure to provide the drinking water, said sources. Sources said that, in the recent past, four people of Kralpora area lost their lives due to release of gases from the well, and today two more people lost their lives. However, the deceased were identified as Ghulam Nabi Khan (35) s/o Majnoon Khan and Ghulam Mohi-udin Ganai (50) went inside the well, located in Ganie Mohalla, to clean it. Subsequently, locals besides teams from SDRF and police rushed to the spot and started a massive rescue operation to retrieve them, said a local resident of Hyhama. A 25-year-old youth Shariq Ahmad Khan, a local youth fell unconscious while being part of the rescue efforts and was immediately referred to nearby SDH Hospital who is said to be stable. The overall rescue operation continued for more than two hours, while as it was not clearly ascertained the reason of their death, but it will be revealed after carrying postmortem. It is pertinent to mention here that on July 2: four local residents of Kralpora area of this north Kashmir district had died due to suffocation as they had gone inside the well for its cleaning. The four locals ha d died due to asphyxiation, and the deceased were identified as Altaf Ahmad Shiekh (35) son of Ghulam Mohi ud-din Shiekh, Showkat Ahmad Khan (27) son of Ghulam Hassan Khan, Mumtaz Ahmad Khan (25) and his brother Altaf Ahmad.
