Delay in testing: inmates quarantined at Radha Swami Ashram hold protest
7/10/2020 12:19:09 AM

EARLY TIMES REPORT

JAMMU, July 9: Annoyed over delay in testing for COVID-19, the inmates quarantined at Radha Swami Ashram Vijaypur in Samba district staged a protest against the mismanagement of the administration.
The protestors allegedly damaged property at the quarantine centre and even threw chairs at the police personnel after the latter went to stop them from resorting to violence.
This is for the second time in a week when violent protests were witnessed inside the Ashram, which is one of the major quarantine facilities in the Jammu region with a capacity of accommodating 2,000 people.
Sources said that the inmates held protest against the delay in sampling and testing for Covid-19 besides lack of facilities. They raised slogans against the administration and demanded that the administration should increase the testing capacity.
“Angry over mismanagement, the protestors damaged property inside the Ashram and flung chairs in air. The police swung into action and reportedly resorted to mild cane-charge to quell the protest. The number of inmates exceeded the quarantine centre’s capacity as labourers from various parts of the country began to return to Jammu and Kashmir”, they said, adding that the centre presently has 2400 people against the capacity of 2000.
Sources said that the government has made 100 per cent testing mandatory of all people entering J&K.
“Anyone is allowed to go outside till their samples are tested negative. The increase in rush has resulted in some delay in testing as our testing capacity at the quarantine centre is around 300 tests per day,” said, adding that there was a backlog (of tests) as well”, sources said.
SDPO Vijaypur Lovkaran when contacted said a violent protest took place in the quarantine centre, but now the situation is under control. “No case against anybody in this matter has been registered”, he said, adding that mostly labourers who are returning in J&K, have been quarantined there”, he added.
