Stalled Tawi artificial lake project mocks at BJP leadership
5 years on, negligible progress recorded on project, completion nowhere in sight
7/14/2020 12:18:25 AM
Early Times Report

Jammu, July 13: The prestigious artificial lake project over river Tawi has failed to make any significant progress during the past over five years, which mocks at the self-proclaimed champions of Jammu’ cause the Bharatiya Janta Party leadership, which has failed to get it completed.
The artificial lake project over River Tawi at Belicharana area was approved by the then Governor Jagmohan in 1986 but after a long delay the Union Government had approved the project under Accelerated Irrigation Benefits Programme (AIBP) to the tune of Rs 50 Crore in the year 2010. Later the cost was revised to the tune of Rs 70 Crore but the project jumped the first deadline of July 2012, which was later revised to July 2013 and many more times.
It was during the tenure of Bharatiya Janta Party-Peoples Democratic Party (BJP-PDP) coalition government in the year 2015 that the then Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed had raised a red flag and announced that the project was not technically and financially viable.
Since the year 2015, it has been now five years there is negligible progress on the project. According to sources in the department, around 80 percent works have been completed.
The construction company had left the works after which the Irrigation and Flood Control department had lodged a case against the company and the case was won by the Department. “For the remaining works, a revised Detailed Project Report (DPR) to the tune of over Rs. 55 Crores, was sought by Irrigation and Flood Control department but so far tenders have not been invited”, sources said.
The LG led administration had also ordered a probe into the poor execution of works over the project in the month of February 2020 but so far the findings of the report have not been public. “It is still unknown, whether the three member probe committee has finalised their report or not”, sources said.
The poor execution of work and negligible progress in the last five years, exposes the self-proclaimed champions of Jammu case. “Now the government has been easing out the lockdown guidelines and voices have been raised to allow the tourists but the picture of Jammu is still as it was five years back. Not even a single new development project has been added to its beauty, which can attract more tourists to the city”, an official said, adding that in the last five years, the state and now the UT is virtually controlled by BJP leadership but in context of Jammu based development projects, there is no progress.
The incoming call facility was not available over the phone of Executive Engineer of Irrigation Dept Div-I Rajinder Prasad, while Chief Engineer Irrigation didn’t pick up his phone for comments.
