Forget politics, NC leaders run condolence services
7/14/2020 12:18:33 AM

Early Times Report

Srinagar, July 13: With the National Conference President Dr Farooq Abdullah having said that the NC would stay away from politics at the moment, the party has been busy offering condolences to the bereaved families known to its leaders.
From NC president Omar Abdullah, who is more active on the Twitter than on the ground, to Dr Farooq Abdullah, the party leaders have dedicated themselves for condolences. While Omar takes a lead on this front online by making tweets, the party leaders only second him on the ground. A group of NC leaders has also been assigned the task of visiting the bereaved families on behalf of the party.
Interestingly, the NC patron and former Chief Minister, Dr Farooq Abdullah has been the leader on this front as well. He recently visited one such bereaved family known to the party in south Kashmir.
After Abdullah, several senior leaders from Srinagar also visited the family.
Sources said the NC is trying to utilize such visits to keep their aides in good humor as otherwise the party has been silent on the issue of politics.
While Dr Farooq Abdullah personally visits or phones such bereaved families, son Omar tweets his condolences online.
But Omar is also busy extending birthday greetings to the party aides. “Basically condolences or greetings are the only two things, which these politicians can do nowadays and thus they are making use of it,” said a political observer.
A senior party leader told Early Times on the condition of anonymity that extending condolences was the non-controversial means of staying relevant.
It is pertinent to mention that both Omar and his father were released from prison earlier this year after the senior Abdullah held a “secret” meeting with the former RAW chief AS Dulat.
After the release from prison, the Abdullahs have given up speaking about politics.
Despite repeated attempts the Abdullahs couldn’t be contacted for comments.
