Early Times Report

JAMMU, July 14: With the death of a 47-year-old Agriculture Officer at Government Medical College Jammu two days after he was tested positive for the COVID-19, the employees of the department of Agriculture are in state of dilemma with ongoing Kissan Melas throughout the J&K.
The ongoing Kissan Melas by the Department of Agriculture are increasing the risk of infections as the social distancing norms as well as health advisories were not being properly followed putting the lives of the participants at risk.
As the Agriculture department has been observing Kissan Pakhwara from 7th to 21st of July, different programmes are being organized at district and tehsil levels, in which large gatherings have been mobilized. The employees of the department who have been organising the events at the ground level are in the state of fear amid a spike in the COVID-19 infections across the Union Territory. The death of an employee of the department has left them insecure as their lives are at risk with the assembling of large gatherings in these Kissan Melas.
People in these Kissan Melas join without following social distancing norms as well as health advisories putting the lives of the participants at risk, said an employee demanding health insurance of the employees being deployed for organising these Melas.
It has been found that the social distancing norms as well as health advisories were openly flouted in these Kissan Melas organized in various districts.
The farmers gathered in Kissan Melas are seen not maintaining social distancing, while most of the gathered people including officials from different departments as well as banks were also performing their duties in violation of the norms.
Some employees also demanded postponing of these Melas and suggested to organise after the control of COVID-19 pandemic.
The office of Directorate of Agriculture Jammu was already sealed on the day an employee was found COVID-19 positive but after the death of the employee, other employees are feeling insecure. They are demanding health insurance as is being provide to heathcare professionals.
