Melas can wait till pandemic ends
7/16/2020 12:13:13 AM
A young officer of the Agriculture Department, who had attended, the ongoing Kissan Melas in Jammu region dying due to COVID-19 and three other officials of the department testing positive for the deadly virus have sent alarm bells ringing.
Employees of the Agriculture Department are demanding that these melas should be cancelled as social distancing norms are not being followed and such gatherings can lead to number of COVID cases shooting up in the Jammu region.
The concern being raised by the officials of the department is genuine and administration should not ignore it. Office of the Director Agriculture has already been sealed in Jammu. If the office has been sealed then why are these melas being organized?
Since the day COVID-19 pandemic has engulfed the world, experts, medicos and others have been asking people to take precautionary measures and maintaining social distancing has been flagged off as one of the basic steps to keep the COVID-19 away.
The unfortunate death of the Agriculture officer should serve as an eye opener for all those people who have started believing that lifting of lockdown has sent the virus packing. The COVID-19 has not gone anywhere and its present within the community.
Farmers visiting these melas should understand that if they don’t follow the norms they will end up putting their lives and the lives of other people at stake. These melas are being organized for the benefit of farmers and they have to ensure that others don’t pay for their carelessness.
Top officials have been maintaining that no norms are being violated but reports from the ground suggest that these melas lead to gatherings and people coming in close contact. Medicos and experts have already warned that if such activities don’t stop the pandemic can wreak havoc in Jammu region.
One can understand that certain activities cannot be avoided and these are necessary. But no activity is important than saving the human lives. Everything can wait till the pandemic is over. May be things will get delayed but delay is acceptable rather than risking the lives of people. The Kisan Credit Cards of farmers which are being linked in these melas can wait till the situation improves. Lives of the employees of the Agriculture Department need to be saved. It’s the duty of the administration to ensure that employees and farmers remain safe.
