PDP’s Jammu chapter closed
7/22/2020 12:26:19 AM

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) shutting down its office in Jammu appears to be the last nail in the coffin of the party in the region. The party which used to thrive on secular principles till its founder late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed was alive gave up his path soon after his death.
The divisive agenda followed by the party after Sayeed’s death was one of the major causes of the party losing ground in Jammu and Kashmir. Today PDP stands on crossroads due to the wrong decisions taken by its top leaders.
After the demise of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, PDP leaders shifted their complete focus on Kashmir and didn’t even make an attempt to listen to the grievances of Jammu based leaders. After Mehbooba Mufti donned the mantle of her father and took over the reins of the erstwhile State, she just used to talk about Pakistan, separatists and Kashmir being an issue. Her politics revolved around the issues which were not even remotely connected with the nationalistic approach and India’s sovereignty.
The PDP at present neither has leaders nor any workers. The offices which were opened by the party are getting closed eventually.
The party which had emerged as an alternative for the National Conference in Kashmir has ended up in a fiasco. The political leaders who were arrested in Kashmir after the abrogation of Article 370 on August 5, 2019 have been released but the PDP chief, Mehbooba Mufti, continues to be under detention due to her anti-national approach and negative thinking. The Jammu based PDP leaders were left with no other option, other than to say goodbye to Mehbooba and her party.
The parties which are emerging in Kashmir have a clear agenda that they want to fight for the restoration of J&K’s statehood. These parties know it very well that PDP has become a history due to the wrong policies followed by it.
PDP’s debacle seems to have served as an eye opener for the parties like the National Conference. The NC to a great extent has softened its stand and has stopped raking up the issues which could put it in trouble. It appears that NC has accepted Centre’s decision to change J&K’s status-quo. PDP leadership is facing the music for preaching lies and following the agenda which was against the very idea of nationalism.
PDP winding up its Jammu office is no big surprise. It had to happen sooner or later.
