Displaced KPs waiting to return
7/31/2020 11:55:38 PM

The Jammu and Kashmir Government transferring 40 kanals of land to set up a separate colony for migrant Kashmiri Pandits in south Kashmir’s Shopian district is a welcome step.
One hopes that this move will pave the way for initiating the process to bring displaced Kashmiri Pandits back to their roots. History stands testimony to the fact that the political dispensations, which ruled J&K in the past never worked towards bringing KPs back.
In 2015, when PDP came into power, it just gave false assurances to Centre that separate colonies for KPs will be established. After the death of the former J&K Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, the proposal to set up the KP colonies was shelved completely. His daughter Mehbooba Mufti, who took over the reins of J&K after her father’s death, succumbed under the pressure of separatists and declared that conditions are not favourable for setting up separate KP clusters.
The insincere attitude of the former political dispensations delayed the process of setting up secure zones for Kashmiri Pandits, who were forced to leave the Valley after the armed insurgency broke out in 1990. The elements sponsored by Pakistan had planned the mass exodus of the members of Kashmiri Pandit community from the Valley from the very first day. The gun totting terrorists who appeared in the streets of Kashmir in 1990 carried out targeted killings of the members of the minority community and terrorized the KPs.
During the past three decades the proposal to set up secure zones for the migrant Kashmiri Pandits has come up on many occasions. Every time it was dumped on one or other pretext by the politicians to keep separatists and the people sitting across the Line of Control (LoC) in good humour.
But now, the time has changed, separatists have become irrelevant and the politicians, who sabotaged this move, have been dumped. It appears that now these colonies will see the light of the day and the KPs who were hounded out of their homes will get a chance to return.
One hopes that the process to build these colonies commences soon and it goes on without any impediments and hurdles. Time is ripe as the terrorism has almost been wiped from the Valley and J&K’s special status too has been abrogated. KPs are waiting eagerly to return to their roots and it appears that their dream will come true soon.
