Cornered NC wants KPs back
8/3/2020 11:51:02 PM
The debate to bring displaced Kashmiri Pandits back to the Valley has heated up after the recent decision of the J&K administration to allot 40-kanals of land in south Kashmir’s Shopain district to set up a separate colony for the KPs. Former J&K Chief Minister and National Conference president, Farooq Abdullah, has also joined the bandwagon by claiming that he would support any mechanism which is aimed at bringing KPs back to the Valley.
Farooq’s statement in a way is an assertion that NC has no objection in setting up separate colonies for KPs. This is probably for the first time that the National Conference has openly supported the long pending demand of the KPs to have separate colonies in place for them. When PDP and BJP were sharing power in erstwhile J&K State, the proposal to have separate KP colonies was dumped. Kashmir centric parties, including National Conference and the ruling PDP, were not interested in setting up separate KP colonies in the Valley. Both these parties didn’t want to annoy the separatists and people sitting across the Line of Control by supporting any such move. But after August 5, 2019, the times have changed and Kashmir centric parties have realized that they are not in a position to sabotage any move. Farooq Abdullah has also called for a probe into the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits from the Valley. It seems senior Abdullah has forgotten that KPs were forced to leave the Valley after members of their community were killed by terrorists in broad daylight. When the insurgency broke out in the Valley, Farooq Abdullah was at the helm and he failed to protect the lives and properties of KPs.
Someone needs to remind him that many innocent Kashmiri Pandits were killed to create fear psychosis and their exodus was orchestrated. Any probe will reveal that forceful migration of Kashmiri Pandits was planned in Pakistan.
Before seeking any probe, Farooq Abdullah should clarify why he couldn’t construct separate colonies for KPs when he was the J&K Chief Minister from 1996 to 2002? And why his son, Omar Abdullah, who ruled J&K for another six years from 2008 to 2014, failed to come up with any concrete proposal to bring KPs back to their land.
The National Conference should stop playing politics over the return of KPs. Farooq should stick to his word that he would support any mechanism which is aimed at bringing KPs back. Rest Centre will take care.
