Early Times Report

SUNDERBANI, Aug 3: A road supposed to connect many villages in a Panchayat in this tehsil of Rajouri district was to be completed in 18 months but even after 36 months only 25 percent of work has been completed.
Early Times has learnt from sources that a road ought to connect different villages in the Nallah Panchayat has seen many stumbling blocks ever since it was commissioned some three years back. The road was first allotted to the Public Works Department (PWD) but was later on decided to be constructed under Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojna (PMGSY).
“The tenders for the construction of road were invited in 2016-17 and the contract was later on awarded to a contractor with the total cost of the work being in between Rs 20 and 22 crores. It was meant to be completed in one and half years but even after three years only one fourth of the work has been completed,” said sources.
Sources said that the construction work has been halted many times and for the last one month or so there has been no work on the road. The basic reason for the delay on construction of road is that the contractor who has been allotted the work sublets the work to a group of contactors on commission basis and there is no accountability as such.
The dilapidated condition of this road forced the locals including the Sarpanch and Panches to come on road and lodge strong protest against the people at helm. Following this the engineers of PMGSY visited the Panchayat and listened to the woes of the people but did not take any concrete action vis-à-vis resumption of work.
Executive Engineer PMGSY Rajouri, Subhash Chandra told Early Times that something wrong might have happened in the past, adding that same would not be allowed during his tenure and that he would make it a point work goes on without any hitch. The locals have appealed for a probe so that responsibility is fixed.
