Despite rebellion, NC won’t sack Ruhulla!
8/5/2020 12:01:46 AM
Srinagar, Aug 4: Even as former Cabinet minister and senior National Conference leader Aga Ruhulla Mehdi has publicly announced a rebellion against the NC by resigning from being the Chief Spokesperson, the party is unlikely to sack him. On July 28, Ruhulla had informed on the social media that he was resigning from being the Chief Spokesperson. “”I have sent across my resignation from the post of Chief Spokesperson of @JKNC_ .
From here on none of my statements should be considered as such,” Mehdi had said on the Twitter. Sources said the though the NC was embarrassed by the public tendering of the resignation, the party has decided not to quit him from the party. It is for the second time in the last few months Mehdi has openly rebelled against the party over the abrogation of the special status of Jammu and Kashmir. But sources said the top leadership of NC is of the opinion that sacking any leader at this point of time would be “against the interests of the party.” Last time he had locked horns with his party colleague, Tanvir Sadiq who is seen as close aide of former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. The verbal brat on the social media between the two had continued for a few days together as both the persons has remained adamant on their stands. This recent controversy erupted after Omar wrote an article for the national media that he wouldn’t contest elections till statehood is not restored.
But Mehdi declined to buy the stand saying that restoration of statehood was not the only issue. “The restoration of statehood should be the least of the demands. It should be the last demand. Our main demand should be restoration of special status,” Mehdi had told the national media in his reaction. It is pertinent to mention that on their release from prison a few months ago, the Abdullahs had told media that they would not speak about politics till all the leaders are released from the prison.
But while some of the senior politicians including former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti is still behind the bars, the Abdullash are suddenly demanding restoration of statehood. Despite repeated attempts the NC leaders were not available for comments.
