SRINAGAR, Aug 9: The 11 kilometers stretch of road from Khag to Aaripanthan in Central Kashmir’s Budgam district is in shambles since the work on development of road started four years back is yet to be completed.
The dilapidated condition of road has compounded problems for people living in the villages falling along the road. The work on construction of road was started in 2016 under the centrally sponsored scheme Central Road Fund (CRF) with an estimated cost of Rs. 11 crores. It was expected that construction would be completed on time thus leading to relief for people, but that was not to be. “The Khag to Aripathan road is in a bad condition and the same taking a heavy toll on the health of travelers. As per the project report the road was to be widened to 40 feet and macadamization was to be carried out on 26 feet, but nothing has been done with regards to macadamization,” said a group of villagers while talking to Early Times.
The people said that since only two months are left in this year for macadamization the same needs to be taken up on war-footing basis if the administration wants relief to be given to masses. They said that since the area is hilly one it would be practically impossible to carry out macadamization once the day temperature starts to come down.
“Since the Administrative Council (AC) recently released 200 crores to the Public Works Department as the first tranche for macadamization on priority roads it is high time that macadamization commences on this road since Khag acts as gateway to famous tourist place Tosa Maidan,” said the locals.
A population of 90,000 in tehsil Khag is suffering as the road is in shambles. It has developed huge potholes and it has become unbearable for people to travel on this road. The locals have appealed Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Development Commissioner Works and Chief Engineer R&B to pay immediate attention towards the condition of the road and complete the macadamization at the earliest.
