Early Times Report

Jammu, Aug 10: With the government making tall claims that discrimination with Jammu is going to be a thing of past, there are questions that would haunt the authorities over whether the blunders of the past will be undone and centrally sponsored schemes will have a equal share for both the regions of the erstwhile state. Interestingly, Jammu region in the recent past was sanctioned Rs 300 crore less than Kashmir Valley for horticulture development. The government while reaming tight-lipped over such discrimination hasn’t till date explained while such a partial treatment was given to the Jammu region that equally deserves the right to have funds for the Centrally Sponsored Schemes to the fullest. The funds meant for the purpose were otherwise supposed to be distributed equally among both the divisions of the state but the government in a bizarre move has allocated Rs 80 lac less to Jammu region that too without any reason. While under MIDH, Kashmir Valley was allocated 4548 lacs in two years, Jammu under the state scheme was given Rs 2814 lacs less than Kashmir Valley that is Rs 1734 lacs. Under another scheme namely RKVY, meant for the development of the horticulture in the state, Kashmir Valley was given Rs 195.65 lacs under this scheme. As far as the Jammu division is concerned, it was given a mere Rs 78 lacs which means the division here again was at the receiving end of the regional discrimination, getting less than Rs 117 lacs when compared to Kashmir Valley. Under another scheme, namely SWAM, Kashmir Valley got 17 lacs in the year 2014-15 and in the financial year of 2015-16, it got Rs 20 lacs which culminates to the total of Rs 37 lacs. For Jammu division, under the same scheme, it was given a total of Rs 20 lac rupees in two years which means Rs 17 lacs less than Kashmir Valley. The details of the remaining years till date are yet to be made public by the government authorities. Meanwhile, a million-dollar question is going to be whether the discrimination of such intensity will rule the roost or will be a thing of the past now. “We really hope that the government will now be explaining everything to the people and will be transparent in its approach. The utilization of funds is hoped to be carried in an impartial and just manner so that the regions do not feel that they have been discriminated within any manner possible. With the new administration in place, hopes are high that Jammu region will not see the discrimination becoming its very inseparable feature,” said a Jammu based civil society activist.
