Early Times Report

SUNDERBANI, Aug 11: In an interesting development the officials of Irrigation and Flood Control department in this tehsil of Rajouri district have withdrawn more than the amount allocated for the construction of an irrigation canal that could have provided relief to the people.
Early Times has learnt from sources that the department some years back started the work on Thumbha Garan canal so as to provide irrigation facilities to the people living in many villages.
The work was taken up at the total cost of 1.82 crores and the total length of the canal was 3.75 kilometers.
“During all these years mere 25 percent work has been completed on the canal and it would take ages for the project to be completed.
The sub-standard material has been used in the construction of canal and it has already developed cracks. The canal has suffered damages and the money has gone waste,” said sources.
Sources said that due to political pressure the officials of the department deviated from the original construction plan of canal and at the same time wild grass and plants have come up on the canal so far developed.
They said the department has taken up some other works without the proper tendering.
When Early Times contacted Divisional Engineer, Irrigation and Flood Control Department Nowshera, Hari Bhushan for his comment it was surprising when he said that department has withdrawn two crores for the construction of canal although the total project cost was 1.82 crores. He said that the department is working to complete the project.
AEE Siote Ajay Kachroo accused the media of blowing things out of proportion and asked the Early Times Correspondent to contact higher officials.
