Early Times Report

Jammu, Sept 16: Being a poor is curse at the time when whole world is battling the deadly COVID 19 virus that snatched the livelihood of many people as more than 15 Crore people alone in India lost their jobs, but in District Hospital Kishtwar-- the NHM doctor forcing the poor patient to purchase the medicines from private shop—the shop of his own choice. As per the details available with “Early Times”, the poor patient identified as Subash who visited the District Hospital Kishtwar for some medical advice related to some renal infection was prescribed, normal saline (NS 1 point), antibiotic and pain killers by the doctor along with Urimax 0.4 mg-- Urimax 0.4 Capsule is an alpha adrenergic antagonist that is used in the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia beside it helps to relieve symptoms like difficulty in passing urine. Even though Normal Saline, Antibiotic and pain killers were among the medicines supplied to various hospitals across the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, but the doctor instead of providing these medicines to this poor patient prescribed him the medicines from private medical shop-the shop of his own choice—in simple words it could be the shop where the doctor in question either had his active private practice or could have been fixed with the company through Medical Representatives- otherwise there is no question of prescribing the medicines to a patient from private medical shop if same are available in hospital stock.
Among the prescribed medicines, only Urimax 0.4 mg capsule is not among the hospital supplies, but could have many options to prescribe the poor patient an alternative medicine available in hospital stock.
Speaking to Early Times, the poor Subash said that he purchased medicines from private shop and spent Rs. 400 for purchasing these medicines added that doctor had asked him to purchase the medicines from private shop and later cross check the medicines. He said that he had not provided any medicine from the hospital.
When Early Times confronted the Doctor, he prefer to remain silent and left the spot.
Many health officials while talking to “Early Times” said that the local doctors from Kishtwar had never been given an opportunity to work at District Hospital Kishtwar while the doctor from Kashmir valley has been offered with posting at headquarter.
The doctor in question was identified by the sources as Dr. Liquat, a Surgeon posted in remote Sarthal area of Kishtwar District and was attached in District Hospital Kishtwar beside was also involved in a private practice at a medical shop adjacent to hospital complex.
The neighbors living in hospital vicinity inform the Early Times that the hospital officials many at time were seen destroying the expired medicines by burning them as a result of which they were feeling risk to their lives.
They said that instead of providing these medicines to poor people, the authorities let these medicines to expire for the reason known to everyone.
It is pertinent to mention that last month few pregnant women were administrated the expired medicine in hospital ward forcing the Deputy Commissioner Kishtwar to order a probe through Chief Medical Officer Kishtwar who had been asked to submit the report in three days, but more than a month has passed- no one knows what happen to the inquiry order by DC Kishtwar.
The poor laborers in J&K are suffering on two fronts- one on Corona front and other due to continuous strike of MGNREGA employees as the department of RDD fail to generate job days as a result of which thousands of laborers who had return home had become jobless and MGNREGA was a big hope for them during these testing times of COVID 19.
