SRINAGAR, Sept 17: Three militants owing allegiance to Hizbul Mujahideen were killed in an encounter with police and security forces at Batamaloo here in the early hours today. A woman was also killed during the shoot-out and clashes broke out in the area after the culmination of encounter.
A police spokesman said that on a specific input regarding presence of militants in Batamaloo area of Srinagar, a joint cordon and search operation was launched by Srinagar Police and CRPF in the said area. During the search operation, as the presence of militants got ascertained they were given opportunity to surrender, however they fired indiscriminately upon the joint search party, which was retaliated leading to an encounter.
“Unfortunately in the initial indiscriminate firing by the militants Deputy Commandant CRPF Rahul Mathur and a lady identified as Kounsar Jan got seriously injured. The injured lady succumbed to her injuries on spot while as the injured CRPF Officer was shifted to hospital for treatment of his injuries,” said the police spokesman.
In the ensuing encounter, three militants were killed and their bodies were retrieved from the site of encounter. They were identified as Zakir Ahmad Paul son of Nisar Ahmad resident of Aloora- Imam Sahib Shopian, Ubair Mushtaq Bhat son of Mushtaq Ahmad Bhat resident of Badragund- Kulgam and Adil Hussain Bhat son of Abdul Rashid Bhat resident of Batapora-Charsoo Awantipora, all affiliated with Hizbul Mujahideeen. They were involved in several attacks in Srinagar City and South Kashmir, police said.
“Keeping in view the prevailing pandemic due to COVID-19 and to ensure the safety of people from inherent risk of contracting the infection, the dead bodies of militants shall be sent to Baramulla for burial after completion of all medico-legal formalities. The nearest family members of the militants shall be allowed to participate in the last rites at Baramulla,” said the spokesman.
Incriminating materials including arms & ammunition were recovered from the site of encounter. All the recovered materials have been taken into case records for further investigation and to probe their complicity in other ‘crimes’. In this connection a case under relevant sections of law has been registered and investigation has been initiated.
Immediately after the culmination of encounter, groups of youth clashed with police and security forces at Batamaloo. The protesters alleged that the woman was killed by the security forces and not during the cross firing. Police and CRPF swung into action and dispersed the protesters.
