9/22/2020 9:41:22 PM

EARLY TIMES REPORT

KISHTWAR, Sept 22:: The price hike of essential commodities particularly the vegetables has hit the consumers badly as their budget for kitchen has taken a severe beating with the soaring prices, at the same time the vegetable vendors claim that they too are suffering on account of price hike of vegetables as well as other daily need items.
Speaking to Early Times, the people blamed the administration of UT of J&K who failed to act against profiteering at Mandi level as a result of which there is a major price hike of vegetables, adding that in the last few months the rates of vegetables have increased almost to double.
The people said that Rajmash (French beans) are being sold at Rs 50/60 per kg, Bhindi (Lady Finger) at Rs 50/kg, Tomato at Rs 80/kg, while green leafy vegetables are being sold at Rs 40 or Rs 50/kg while at the same time potatoes are being sold at Rs 40/kg and onion at Rs 60/70 per kg, adding that similarly other vegetables are also being sold at exorbitant rates.
The people said that after purchasing the vegetables at sky rocketing prices, half of the vegetable found to be rotten or not fit for consumption which adds to the miseries of the common man.
The people blamed that administration hardly check the market as a result of which the profiteering is at its peak.
Karan Singh, a vegetable vendor at Shaheedi Mazar Chowk Kishtwar said that most of the vegetables had vanished from the Mandi and said that they are themselves purchasing the vegetables at higher rates from open market.
Karan said that they are at receiving end since the supplies got delayed as a result of which few vegetables itself started rotting before they reach the vendors. He said that there is hardly any local supply of vegetables and added that they have no control over price hike. He said that it was not only common people who were suffering on account of price hike, they too suffered losses since the administration has put restrictions and curbs on opening of markets due to COVID-19.
