‘4G may not return to J&K so soon’

Early Times Report

Jammu, Sept 23: The restoration of 4G internet services in two districts of Jammu and Kashmir had generated hopes that other districts would also get the high speed internet soon but possibilities about any such decision being taken in near future look bleak.
The latest statement given by the Ministry Home Affairs (MHA) has thrown ample hints about the continuance of the restrictions in near future as it has batted strongly in favour of 2G services, which it claimed are enough for people to access the internet.
In response to some specific questions about the date by which government intends to restore internet services in Kashmir in view of the Supreme Court directions over internet services, the Union Home Ministry has given an often repeated response in which it has given an explanation, justifying the 2G internet services, which was not an impediment in Covid control measures including dissemination of information to the general public as well as health workers.
Moreover the MHA has also strongly justified 2G speed for online educational services. “e-learning applications and education/e-learning websites of the Union as well as JK government are accessible over 2G for downloading e-books and study material. The restriction on high speed internet has also not been an impediment in the administration of justice and the courts have taken special measures to conduct their proceedings during the pandemic”, it asserts.
From the responses it could be easily inferred that the government has no plans to restore the 4G internet services in near future. “On one hand the violence as well as protests in Kashmir Valley, have declined to a larger extent and in the largely peaceful situations the advocacy of 2G services by the Union Ministry was intriguing and discouraged the public at large, which has been demanding the restoration of high speed internet services.
