Early Times Report

REASI, Sept 25: The Department of Agriculture has played a cruel joke with the farmers of this district since a solitary tractor has been provided to the farmers under a centrally sponsored scheme. Under the scheme tractors are provided on subsidy to the farmers so as to improve production.
Sources told Early Times that farmers of 12 zones of Reasi district were disappointed after they came to know that just one tractor has been provided by the department and that too on half-hearted basis. They said that only 50 percent of subsidy has been provided with the remaining to be borne by the farmer at least for the time being.
“The Reasi district has two agriculture sub-divisions Reasi and Dharmarhi and there are 12 agriculture zones in the district. The department received more than 70 applications for the supply of tractors under subsidy under the centrally sponsored scheme. The farmers were dejected after they came to know just one tractor has been sanctioned,” said sources.
The farmers have demanded and urged Commissioner Secretary Department of Agriculture that they should be given the tractors in good number so that the benefits of scheme trickle down to the grassroots level. They said that at least one tractor should be given to one farmer in each zone.
Chief Agriculture Officer Reasi told Early Times that he cannot anything in this regard since he is bound by directions from the top.
