Devika River Project becomes a distant dream for Jammuites
Years on, no visible progress on ground

EARLY TIMES REPORT

JAMMU, Oct 1: Although the announcement of rejuvenation of River Devika in Udhampur was made with much fanfare years ago by the central government but the current progress on the project has exposed all the tall claims of BJP leadership, where hardly visible progress can be seen on the ground.
The main purpose of the project was to make Devika River pollution free and to bring its pristine glory back but despite spending huge funds on the project till date no positive outcome has been seen. “This sacred river is still grappling with water pollution coming from residential areas situated nearby it,” sources said.
Although the project was handed over to Sewerage Department, which failed to execute it and moreover the funds released for it could not be spent fully rather it was wasted on renovation, repair and other works. In order to deviate the discharge of waste water from households, the work of laying sewerage pipelines was started and for this majority of the lanes and by-lanes in Udhampur were dug out without coordinating with the concerned department. Besides there is huge encroachment along Devika banks, which could not be removed till date and has become a major hurdle.
“Though a grant of Rs 186 crores was sanctioned by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate change Government of India but no demarcation of Devika land, no proper plan for revival of River Devika has been made and even the unauthorized construction and encroachment has not been removed,” they said.
Despite directions to Housing and Urban Development Department to take necessary action for removing unauthorized construction and encroachments on the bank of river Devika right from Gangera Hill to Gopal Ghat Mandir and Nainsue Temple at Udhampur, till date no action has been taken, they added.
