Mehbooba Mufti to lose Fairview residence

Jammu, Oct 21: The former Chief Minister and Peoples Democratic Party President, Mehbooba Mufti may lose her official accommodation soon.
Sources said the government of Jammu and Kashmir has recently discussed the issue of prospective eviction of the PDP President from her official residence, the Fairview on the Gupkar Road in Srinagar. It was reliably learnt that Mehbooba, who was recently released from home detention, would be formally asked to evict the plush accommodation on the heels of the Zaberwan Hills. Sources said the government has discussed the matter threadbare at a high level meeting where officials from New Delhi were also present.
It was reliably learnt that Mehbooba Mufti would be given a notice of one month to evict the house which she had officially inherited from her father and then Chief Minister, Mufti Muhammad Sayeed.
Soon after having lost her government in 2018, Mehbooba Mufti was served notices to evict her official accommodation in Jammu and the national capital, New Delhi. As per the previous orders of the then state of Jammu and Kashmir, the Chief Minister was entitled to lifelong official accommodation.
After Mufti’s death, Mehbooba succeeded her as the Chief Minister, retaining the official accommodation.
After the abrogation of the special status of Jammu and Kashmir, however, the special law for the former CM’s to enjoy lifelong accommodation also got abrogated.
Officials said till her detention, which lasted for around 14 months, Mehbooba had an excuse that she could not evict the official accommodation from behind the bars.
“But now that she is a free citizen, she will have to comply to any orders of eviction as and when issued,” a senior official told Early Times on the condition of anonymity.
It is pertinent to mention that Mehbooba’s counterpart and National Conference President Omar Abdullah has already decided to evict the government accommodation comprising of two bungalows on the same Gupkar Road.
