J&K LSA, Forest Department launch 'Miyawaki' method of Plantation
10/22/2020 11:02:23 PM
Early Times Report
JAMMU, Oct, 22: Under the patronage of Chief Justice, High Court of Jammu and Kashmir and Patron-in-Chief J&K Legal Services Authority (JKLSA), Gita Mittal, and under the guidance of Justice Rajesh Bindal, Executive Chairman JKLSA, in co-ordination with Forest Department has launched Miyawaki method of afforestation to grow urban forests and expand the green cover in the UT.
Pertinently, Miyawaki is a unique technique pioneered by Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki that helps build dense native forest. The approach is supposed to ensure that plants growth is 10 times faster and the resulting plantation is 30 times dense than usual.
The first of its kind campaign started with plantation of a mini forest including around 500 saplings of various varieties in a strip of 5 Kanal of land at village Nainsu near Devak in Udhampur district adjacent to Industrial Area. The staff of DLSA Udhampur and Forest Department Udhampur besides locals pledged to feed, protect and preserve the enclosure of forest.
In today's programme, the participants were apprised that if someone has even a small strip of 200 yards of land, he can plan to raise a mini forest over the same and the Legal Services Institutions and Forest Department across the UT of J&K would be available for all the necessary help and guidance.
Those present in the programme included Mohan Lal Manhas, Chairman, DLSA, Udhampur, Sandeep Kour, Secretary DLSA, Udhampur, Shweta Jambial, DFO, Udhampur, PLVs of DLSA Udhampur and officials of District Forest Department Udhampur.
It is pertinent to mention here that for ensuring the protection of existing natural environment and to repair and replenish the damage already caused to the ecology, J&K Legal Services Authority has focused on increasing the green cover by undertaking various initiatives. Under such initiatives, thousands of fruit bearing and non fruit bearing saplings were planted by all the DLSA's in collaboration with Forest Department. This new venture is another step in this direction.
