Early Times Report

Jammu, Oct 23: While the high speed internet connectivity is yet to be restored fully in Jammu and Kashmir, some people of Kashmir have landed in trouble for alleged sex chat. Official sources said in the last few months, the Jammu and Kashmir Police have received some complaints from people of Kashmir being “blackmailed for having resorted to alleged sex chat, with the other parties trying to black mail them.”
Sources said such chats are being done on social media platforms like that of Facebook and WhatsApp in particular.
Sources said some such videos have surfaced. But the sources said the people who have come under scanner have told police that they got calls from unknown numbers on the social media and simply chatted with them via video calls.
Sources said given the rise in such complaints, the Cyber Police Station Srinagar have issued one public advisory asking people to stay away from responding to any unknown calls on the social media “lest it proves a trap to defame and blackmail them.”
“BE ALERT WhatsApp and Faceboob Video Calling Scam,” reads one notification issued by the Cyber Police Kashmir.
“Fraudsters nowadays, call general public using WhatsApp and Facebook Video calling services imposing as girls. The fraudster record the video call and then morph it and demands money from victims for not circulating the recorded video on internet. DO NOT RESPOND ANY VIDEO CALL FROM UNKNOWN NUMBERS THROUGH WHATSAPP & FACEBOOK. BE ALERT BE SAFE CYBER POLICE KASHMIR a 9596770555,” reads the notice.
A police official said such racket is believed to be run by some persons masquerading as women “interested to talk to men.” “What appears is that the video chat is morphed and the people from here(Kashmir) are shown as morphed,” the official said on the condition of anonymity.
He, however, said the alleged sex chat cannot be ruled out outright. “Given the kind of cases which have been coming across there’s every possibility that sex chats in some cases may have also taken place. It’s a matter of investigation to expose the truth behind such cases,” he added.
