Early Times Report

SRINAGAR, Oct 25: Property worth crores belonging to the All India Radio (AIR) Srinagar has virtually been left unattended by the people at helm and there are chances that the same may be used by anti-social elements for carrying out their activities.
Sources told Early Times that the property located in the Wanbal-Rangreth area in the summer capital of Jammu & Kashmir would fetch crores according to the market value. This has made no difference for the higher ups of AIR Srinagar and it is due to this reason that they are unmoved.
“Authorities of the AIR Srinagar are in deep slumber and they have virtually taken no step to ensure that the property is utilized to the best possible level. The property consists of eight Kanals of land and three buildings are spread over the area. It would have been of great use for the AIR Srinagar authorities,” said sources.
Sources said that some people have already caused damage to the entrance gate of the huge plot of land adding that same may not be ruled out with respect to the three buildings that are present there. They said that if immediate steps are not taken then the property would fall in the lap of land ‘mafia’.
“The buildings were put to optimum use by the AIR authorities some decades back with the news bulletins being broadcasted from one of the buildings. In the other two buildings other sections of the radio station were stationed. In other words it can be said that the property was the full fledged AIR station for some decades,” said sources.
Sources said that once the AIR Srinagar was shifted to the present place the buildings at Wanbal-Rangreth were left unattended. They said that later on these buildings were guarded by a group of guards engaged by the authorities of AIR Srinagar.
“Since the past five years the guards have left the place and as on date there is nobody to look after the buildings as well as huge plot of land. It seems the AIR Srinagar authorities have forgotten about this property and it does not figure in their scheme of things. Had it not been so then the same would have been utilized to the fullest possible level,” said sources.
The sources said that going by the conservative estimates the property is valued anything between 10 and 15 crores. They said that if the property belonged to any private person or company it would have been developed like anything thus becoming an attraction for the people as a whole.
